when there’s a group of your friends hanging out and youre like trying to join the conversation but dont know how
On a meta level, it ties back to the fact that Horrorterrors are based on Lovecraft’s Eldritch abominations, beasts that are by their very essence extremely alien to us, obscure, and unknowable. This leads many to believe, for example, we’ll never be given the Horrorterrors’ origin, as it would be a breach of their thematic significance.
Rose is our best example, and talks in a completely indecipherable way, which is how Eldritch language is typically protrayed. People have even made text modifiers to parallel the effects without actually obscuring the words being written.
In terms of non-meta reasoning, after being imbued with grimdark energy, Rose may have been essentially forced to speak in such a way (or perhaps, everyone else’s perceptions of her speech are altered, if that makes sense). It could be because the Horrorterrors themselves speak this way (which they often if not always do, but it’s implied they sometimes sing in English at the very least), or perhaps they have the actual motive of making their servants indecipherable, such as not to unveil their purpose and plans.
(snip for length)
Mmhm. I think Rose’s particular manifestation of this ‘berserk mode’ was definitely influenced by the horrorterrors (along with her natural interest in the zoologically dubious and her mother’s aspect). It all mixes together into a delightful mixture of weird and scary.
I think the tendency to use grimdark as a word describing a certain state is silly because as you say it really fits Rose’s situation more than anyone else’s. I think it just kind of caught on as a character mod (like trickster mode). When Hussie referenced it via ‘grimbark’ people assumed that meant they were similar states, but really they were vastly different in all but a few minor characteristics.
The only person I can think of who might manifest a ‘grimdark’/aspect berserk state somewhat like Rose would be Feferi, considering her connection to the horrorterrors via her lusus. And even that would be different since she’s a Life player.
If people moved past the whole ‘grimdark = tentacles and creepy ooze’ and thought about how it’s coded to the character’s aspect and interests, along with external influences, ‘grimdark’ designs could get so much more interesting.
A grimdark Eridan would probably have angel-type stuff. Aradia… oh man, I don’t even want to think about Aradia. And a Roxy in berserk mode would be terrifying.
I’m not sure what you mean by Aranea being in this ‘berserk mode’, though? Obviously it’s hard to tell whether troll skin is changing, but I don’t recall her having the telltale aura or sudden weird and unexplainable powerups. She looks scary and glowy when she heals Jake, but that is just the light of the power we already knew she had.
Sorry I reappeared to flatten you guys with even more words about this. I’ll spin through, reblog some stuff, and then get out of your hair and go back to reading Behemoth.
We’re still forgetting the other one who got berserked by Condy: Jane. She’s freaking scary. Why are you still using “Grimdark” and “berserk mode” interchangeably, though? To me, ‘grimdark’ = ‘beserk mode’ + ‘horrorterrors’, meaning nobody else could possibly go grimdark. Jade’s “Grimbark” was a pun on her Bec-serk mode (:P) and well, for Aranea, I kinda extended “berserk” to just a regular “going mad with power”, since we were including Eridan. But yeah, Aspect Berserk Mode Aradia would be terrifying (wouldn’t that be how she was from the start, kinda, surrounded by ghosts and such?) And Roxy? And OH GOD JAKE?!
I just blew my own mind. Man, you don’t really think about the sheer potential these guys have until you picture them going nuts and wreaking havoc. Which will happen. And oh man, when it does….
We’re in for one HELL of a ride.
Jane does not display the same traits (darkened skin, lingering Aspect-colored aura, enhanced powers) that I personally am using to qualify for this ‘berserk mode’.
As for why I’m using them interchangeably - the fandom seems to have adopted ‘grimdark’ as a word for pretty much every gray skinned menace, appropriate or not. I prefer ‘Aspect berserk’, but since that’s my term and other people may not know what I’m talking about, I’m throwing grimdark in every once and a while to keep people grounded.
if white people be like “white people be like” but i’m white and i be like white people be like “white people be like” then who’s driving the car
